Mark Keith

University of Pretoria, South Africa

I am a wildlife ecologist at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. My interests are broad, but I mainly work on how animal populations and communities (small to medium mammal species, like bats, rodents, and smaller carnivores) respond to impacts of land-use such as agriculture, mining, and urbanisation, as well as land-use changes like bush encroachment and management actions such as re-introduction of large mammals. The effect of how these drivers impact populations and species across spatial and temporal scales are also of importance. My research is characterised by collaborative work, providing invaluable opportunities and as a result, I have been working on a large range of mammalian species, from little rodents to mega-herbivores, to coastal cetaceans. Collaboration is a key aspect of my work, allowing me to study a diverse range of mammals, from rodents to mega-herbivores and coastal cetaceans. These partnerships have been invaluable, enabling us to integrate AI and machine learning pipelines to extract and analyse ecological data from large datasets more efficiently.
